Bottom Pub Announcement- Result of Offer & Formation Meeting

The following is a message concerning the offer to buy the bottom pub and a meeting on the formation of a Cygnet Community Co-operative.

Hello Community,

We must announce, unfortunately, that our offer for the Bottom Pub was unsuccessful. The pub is now under contract.

We've contacted the real estate agent to offer our congratulations and support to the incoming owners, along with our community feedback and documentation, should it be of use to them. After all, we want to see the Bottom Pub thriving and lively again, and we now have a wealth of local ideas, interest, and feedback that should inform whatever it becomes next.

We don't know who the buyer is. Worth saying upfront, to save you the trouble of asking 😉

However, this is not the end for the Cygnet Community Co-operative.

As mentioned previously, a co-operative- owned by locals, aimed at collectively acquiring local assets and building community wealth- is still a great idea, regardless of this outcome. We will go ahead with the Co-operative's formation, with the intent of electing a board to investigate local needs, wants, and opportunities. Who knows what the next site of inquiry will be, but there's so much potential in this town beyond the Bottom Pub.

Sunday 23rd, 3pm, Supper Room, Cygnet Town Hall.

We'll start with a short wrap-up and debrief on the campaign, no more than half an hour. This will flow directly into the Co-operative formation meeting.

If you're interested in becoming a member or running for the board, stay on to:

  • Vote on the proposed Rules (attached) and suggest any changes

  • Elect the board

The elected board will then meet to decide the Co-operative's next strategic direction.

With this, the working group's campaign for the Bottom Pub concludes. It's been a remarkable few months. Ones that have shown just how much heart Cygnet has. We're excited to see what the Cygnet Community Co-operative can do for this town. It wasn't the pub this round, but there are plenty of other opportunities out there calling for community ownership. Now we have the vehicle to make it happen.

Come along Sunday the 23rd. Celebrate this campaign with us. Join the co-op to help shape what's next, or put your hand up for the board and help steer it.

If you have any questions, bring them to the meeting, or shoot us an email. We will only be responding to this email for the next week, after which it will be discontinued.

See you there,

Bottom Pub Working Group
