FOGO Program
The Cygnet Association has announced a composting initiative with support from Huon Valley Council. Both bodies have embarked on a journey towards waste elimination and education, with a focus on kitchen compostable waste.
A number of Cygnet food outlets have signed up to receive kitchen compostable waste bins, also known as FOGO bins (food organics and garden organics). The project will divert waste from landfill and transform it into compost. The waste will be processed and used by the community to support Cygnet street planting initiatives.
TCA said it believed this collaborative effort would both reduce waste and foster greater environmental responsibility within the community. Participating businesses are: Jacky’s Café, Red Velvet Lounge, Cygnet Old Bank, Cygnet Garden Larder and Cygnet Hotel.
TCA is helping educate establishments to separate kitchen waste from other waste with a FOGO guide. A collection of kitchen compostable waste bins has been procured. TCA volunteers will coordinate the collection schedule.
The data, lessons and best practices identified in the trial will be a valuable resource for the council as it implements its own FOGO scheme in 2025/26. Waste audits will offer insights into the types and quantities of waste being produced, helping the council determine the most effective approaches.
Composting workshops will educate community members about the benefits and techniques of composting, empowering them to adopt sustainable practices in their own homes.
